What makes the best natural insulation?

A question we get asked by nearly every customer is “What do you use as insulation?”

There is only one answer…

British Sheep Wool Insulation.

There are many different types of insulation on the market in our modern-day world, but very few with connections steeped in history.
Everyone knows what insulation does, it keeps you warm and reduces noise, right?

Well, it actually does quite a bit more. Yes, insulation does prevent heat loss but it can also reduce heat gain too. And yes, insulation can reduce noise, but have you ever thought that certain types of insulation can manage humidity and moisture levels as well?

Managing the humidity and the moisture levels can help create and improve healthy indoor air quality and sheep wool is perfectly positioned for this. Thermally sheep wool is 10% to 20% more efficient than low density glass fibre insulations currently on the market and acoustically sheep wool is the best performer due to its irregular surface, shape and density. Once insulation has been installed it can be difficult to replace and could be costly and that is why the cheapest isn’t always the best.

Everyone at some point has seen sheep grazing on exposed hills and in fields. If you think about what weathers they have to deal with from sunshine to rain and snow to wind, their wooly fleece keeps them warm in winter, cool in warmer months, and resistant to winds, this is because of the many layers of natural fibers the fleece holds. So, if sheep wool does all this for sheep could it do the same for us?

Well, the quick answer is yes. This is the reason we chose sheep wool insulation to insulate all our shepherd’s huts, which is quite fitting really as the original purpose of a shepherd’s hut was for shepherds to tend to their flocks of sheep. We also wanted to use British sheep wool from a British company, Thermafleece.

Sheep wool is a natural, sustainable and renewable resource.

Sustainability is becoming more and more important in today’s world with the ever-bigger push for eco-friendly products and Sheep wool insulation is a perfect sustainable choice in the insulation world. Another environmental benefit of sheep wool insulation is the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. With each Kg of natural Sheep wool fibre around 2kg of carbon dioxide is locked up and has zero ozone depletion potential.

Pretty impressive eh! And on top of this, due to its thermal performance, it helps reduce the old energy costs too.

So, Sheep Wool insulation, for us, is the perfect option.
